Kiefer Sutherland - From 24 to outer space

By Lesley O'Toole, Independent.co.uk
March 27, 2009

Kiefer Sutherland could give Twilight's Robert Pattinson a tip or two about being the hunted male star of a hugely successful vampire movie. The role which made Sutherland the Pattinson of his day was bleached blond vampire David in 1987's The Lost Boys.

He subsequently starred in two Young Guns films and with the requisite famous girlfriend, Flatliners co-star Julia Roberts was, fleetingly anyway, half the "Brangelina" of their early Nineties day. The rest of the decade bar a few bright spots (1992's A Few Good Men was one) attracted less coverage for Sutherland, personal and professional, to his still apparent chagrin.

"I remember I had Young Guns 2 come out and that was the number one film in the US for that week and then Flatliners came out the next week and it was the number one film for that week. But I couldn't get a job. I could never figure that out. Then all of a sudden 10 years later along comes 24, and I'm in a position to do some of the things I really wanted to do. I try and remember to make that second chance go to other people in my life."

Oliver Stone Returning To Wall Street

The current recession and scandals on Wall Street have had an unexpected consequence: a decision by director Oliver Stone to revive plans to mount a sequel to his 1987 drama Wall Street. Stone had previously said in interviews that he had abandoned the project because he "couldn't come up with the right way to go about it." However, published reports said yesterday (Wednesday) that Stone had changed his mind after seeing a rewrite of the sequel by Allan Loeb. The reports also indicated that Michael Douglas had agreed to reprise his role as Gordon Gekko and that Shia Labeouf would play his assistant in the new movie, currently titled Wall Street 2 (after previously being titled Money Never Sleeps). "We need to keep the story line under wraps, but it's literally ripped from today's headlines," 20th Century Fox spokesman Gregg Brilliant told the Associated Press. "It's going to be very big and very cool." IMDB Read more!

Transporter 3 Review

Transporter was a really good action movie, with an interesting protagonist and well-filmed sequences.Transporter 2 was, for many fans of the original, kind of disappointing. What about Transporter 3?Well, it’s closer to the original, although there are elements from the first sequel and from Crank.

Jason Statham returns as Frank Martin and he’s pressured into transporting a package, which is a part of a bigger plan.At first, he’s unwilling to accept the offer (“I’m unavailable” he says) and he’s comfortable resting and fishing with Insp.Tarconi.Eventually, he’s forced to accept and throughout the movie he’s also forced to violate his code.As I said, the movie is closer to the original, and that’s evident from the plot, one of the elements of which is the relationship between Martin and Valentina (who is later revealed to be the package, and part of an attempt to extort an Ukranian minister).Francois Berleand (Inspector Tarconi) also returns and Robert Knepper is the villain.First-time actress Natalya Rudakova plays Valentina.

The usual elements of the series are present: the elaborate, well-filmed chases and fighting sequences. There are also flaws. However, Transporter 3 is a decent sequel, an entertaining movie that will satisfy fans and those looking for a good action movie. It’s worth mentioning that’s the most successful (in terms of worldwide box office gross) movie of the trilogy, so a third sequel is certainly possible, although it will probably be produced after 3-5 years.

Ridley Scott Considers Return to Aliens?

During an interview with IESB.net (in the X-Men Origins: Wolverine world premiere), Fox Co-Chair Tom Rothman said:
"There's been some talk. Ridley Scott, Ridley is right now working on Robin Hood, but I think he's toying with the idea and that would be great for us. I mean, it's always been a matter of, really, if you can get the originator to do it that would be the greatest thing, so I've got my fingers crossed, all of them."

"Tourists" Snap Shots for 'Angels & Demons'

When the production of Angels & Demons had been refused permission to shoot key scenes in the Vatican, special effects director Ryan Cook had a team of people blend in with tourists and take about 250,000 pictures and shoot hours of video to use as reference back in Los Angeles.

Cook said in an interview with an Italian movie magazine (then excerpted by The Scotsman, and further excerpted here): "The ban really put us in a lot of trouble because we could not use the precision instruments which are used to take photographs and make reconstructions in the computer."

John Woo's next project

John Woo recently talked to Empire about his future projects. The next movie that he'll direct is a Chinese-language epic (something on a similar scale to Red Cliff ) that sees him make a rare foray into romance. "It's like a Romeo and Juliet love story," he says. "A love story, but with war scenes."

About Hard Boiled 2: "I'm involved as producer. We're working on the script and I'm sure it's gonna be a very interesting movie, but it won't be ready until years from now."Chow Yun-Fat's involvement is still in the balance, according to Woo.

About 1941 (Woo's previously-announced historical epic): "I had to pass because we had so many problems with the people who owns the rights," the director told Empire. "We couldn't make a deal so I had to give it up. It's a little painful since we spent so long developing the story and we found very good actors."

Six years have passed since Paycheck (his last Hollywood movie),John Woo has settled in Beijing and has no immediate plans to return to the US, although he's not ruling it out. "I will make more Chinese movies, but if I get a better script [from Hollywood] I will do it again."

It's a shame that Western audiences won't see the complete Red Cliff (the two-part, four and half-hour version, although it's available on Asian DVD and Blu-Ray). Read more!

The Last Action Hero: Jason Statham

Jason Statham's greatness announced itself early in his acting career—88 seconds into his motion picture debut, to be precise, in the opening sequence of Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels (1998). Statham plays Bacon, a small-time criminal peddling stolen merchandise ("Handmade in Italy, hand-stolen in Stepney") on a London street corner. Suddenly, the police show up; Bacon and his accomplice take flight; and then, rounding a rain-slickened corner with a suitcase under his arm, he nearly tips over, performing a ridiculous little shuffle-step at an almost-45-degree angle to the pavement, his feet moving furiously but his forward motion momentarily stalled, like Wile E. Coyote in the instant before he realizes he has run out of clifftop road and is about to plummet 5,000 feet into a canyon. Whereupon Bacon regains his footing, vaults a barrier, and spills the entire contents of his suitcase as he races down a flight of stairs.

This is the essence of Statham-ism, a mix of bionic brute force and slapstick—Robocop meets Keystone Cops. It's a formula that has made Statham the biggest action hero going: Since 2001, Statham star vehicles have grossed $500 million worldwide. Currently, Statham is the face of two hit franchises: The Transporter, whose latest sequel, Transporter 3 (2008), earned more than $100 million, and Crank, whose second installment, Crank: High Voltage, arrives in theaters this Friday with the irresistible tag line "He was dead … But he got better."

Brett Ratner updates on Beverly Hills Cop 4 and more

Brett Ratner (Rush Hour series, X-Men 3, Red Dragon) recently talked with Movieline about his slate of projects in-development.

About Conan: "(Conan is ) something I'm actively attached to. We're just budgeting the script and trying to figure out when's a good time and where to shoot it. It's kind of a global landscape."

Beverly Hills Cop 4?
"Yes.

After Conan?
I don’t know. I’m developing the script.

Another rumor said you’re looking for a PG-13 for it.
No. That’s ridiculous. It’s a hard R."

Trump Heist?
"Yes. That’s the script that’s closest to getting made, in my opinion. Ted Griffin, who wrote Ocean’s Eleven for me when I was attached, is writing it now. I just hired him to come in and write Trump Heist, which is one of my favorite projects. Because of the way that the business is, you never know which slot you’re going to get, or when you’re going to make the movie. But that’s one I’m really, really interested in making. There’s no order to these movies, though. I don’t control the financing. Whichever gets greenlit first is the one that’s gonna go."

'The Hobbit' Will Be Two Films

Guillermo Del Toro and Peter Jackson confirmed (talking to to Empire Magazine in honor of the publication's 20th birthday) that 'The Hobbit' will be two films. This should put to bed the theories that one film would focus on The Hobbit and the second would be a bridge film to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Del Toro: "We've decided to have The Hobbit span the two movies, including the White Council and the comings and goings of Gandalf to Dol Guldur."

Jackson: "We decided it would be a mistake to try to cram everything into one movie. The essential brief was to do The Hobbit, and it allows us to make The Hobbit in a little more style, if you like, of the [LOTR] trilogy." Read more!

She sees very well and hears very well: she is an animal!.”

Angelina Jolie in "Serious Talks" for 'Sin City 2'?

By Clint Morris,Moviehole
April 10, 2009

According to a rather high-profile producer friend, Angelina Jolie is now in “serious talks” – as opposed to merely being mentioned as a possibility, or having a casual coffee with the filmmakers to suss out her interest – to star in director Robert Rodriguez's “Sin City 2”.

Jolie first spoke to Rodriguez and writer/co-director Frank Miller about the film in 2006. All went quiet on the project though, largely because the producers weren't ready to pull the trigger on the production, and all converse ceased. Now, according to my mole, the project has gathered steam and the filmmakers are trying to get Jolie to officially commit to playing the female lead.

Jolie would play the iniquitous Ava, the lead character in Miller's "A Dame to Kill For" story. She’s the former flame of clean-living photographer Dwight McCarthy, and shows up and professes her love for him. When he finds out she's in way over her head, it looks as though trouble has found him. And he’d be right.

The project would reunite Jolie with her “Beyond Borders” co-star Clive Owen, who’s loosely attached to reprise his role as McCarthy.

We’re told that the long-gestating sequel is inching forward a little faster than it was, say, six months ago. Wonder if it's the Weinstein’s who are suddenly raring to go? Word is, they haven’t lost the rights to the film, but could if the project doesn't transition from a simmer to a boil pretty soon.

Iron Man 2 Set Photos,Casting and more

Don Cheadle,Gwyneth Paltrow,Robert Downey Jr. on the set of Iron Man 2 (Cinematical/justjared/ SpoilerTV)

Three days ago Iron Man 2 began filming and the first set photos were posted on the internet.According to IESB ,on set was veteran actor Garry Shandling. The site reports that Shandling is a Senator that appears in a continuation of the final scene from the first IRON MAN film.

Robert Downey Jr. confirmed ( to the MTV Splash Page) that Demon in a Bottle won't be the storyline of the sequel."As a matter of fact, I think that's probably best saved because it's such its own storyline. We're going for the interim space [between the origin and Demon] which is more a look behind the mask of someone who says he's Iron Man and what it really is to become a superhero."Last week,Downey spoke to Entertainment Tonight:"(Iron Man 2) is almost entirely about character, and yet we still have twice as much action as we did last time, so it's going to be nuts. ... Essentially Iron Man 2 is about looking behind the armor, or the armature, of a superhero. It's one thing to say you're Iron Man, it's another thing to be fully ready to do that."
He added that he's been rehearsing with co-star Scarlett Johansson, who plays the Black Widow, and says that "she's in insane shape. She's getting lean and mean."

In other news,Tim Robbins refuted the rumour ( to ReelTalk) that he'll play Howard Stark.

Leonard Nimoy will guest on Fringe

According to various reports,Leonard Nimoy will guest on Fox's Fringe as William Bell, Massive Dynamic founder and Walter Bishop’s former lab partner at Harvard.

Showrunners Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman revealed some of the plot points for Nimoy's episode (season one finale) to E!.

Regarding the relationship between Walter Bishop (John Noble) and William Bell (Leonard Nimoy): "We always imagine that they were two of the smartest guys in their classes, and they went through the Ivy League together."

"At that point in college where you're discovering yourself, but these guys, the intelligent geniuses they are, they might come to conclusions about what's important in this world. So we always imagine that they were very much like each other, very much friends, and very much a team—brothers in a way, and that life took them in different directions, either complementary or not directions, and we're going to find out."
