The Tudors Casting News

By Erin Martell,Tv Squad

R&B singer Joss Stone is giving television acting a try. Stone is taking on the role of Anne of Cleves in season three of Showtime's The Tudors. Anne of Cleves was Henry VIII's fourth wife; the marriage was annulled after less than a year. The role is Stone's first significant part on a TV series. She previously appeared in an episode of American Dreams and in the film Eragon.

Fans of the singer will have to wait a while for Stone to turn up on the drama series. The third season begins with the king's marriage to Jane Seymour (played by Anita Briem), with Anne of Cleves coming into the picture later on.

There are different explanations about the marriage's failure. According to one popular story, Henry agreed to marry Anne after seeing her portrait, but was displeased with her looks at their first meeting. I'd be surprised if Stone's Anne of Cleves is presented as unattractive, although TV's version of ugly is vastly different from reality.

On the heels of Season 2's Peter O'Toole, The Tudors is adding another prestigious veteran actor to the cast. Variety reports that Max von Sydow will be joining Season 3 of the series, playing Cardinal Von Waldburg. Von Waldburg is a German-born clergyman who attempts to bring about the defeat of Henry VIII (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). Von Sydow will appear in four episodes of Season 3, which will be comprised of eight episodes in total.

Von Sydow's numerous credits include his Oscar nominated work in Pele the Conqueror along with films as diverse as Flash Gordon, Hannah and her Sisters, Needful Things and Conan the Barbarian. In recent years he's been seen in Rush Hour 3, Minority Report and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, but his place in pop culture history is cemented with his work as the title character in The Exorcist.
