James Mangold (Cop Land,3:10 to Yuma,Walk the Line) is attached to direct a romantic comedy, starring (possibly) Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. The story involves a woman who "has terrible luck with men but finds her path intertwined with that of a mysterious handsome man she meets on a blind date."
According to Variety, the untitled film was previously known as Wichita as well as Trouble Man during its gestation at 20th Century Fox.It's pointed out that neither Cruise nor Diaz are "formally" attached to the project, but that the film is one of several that Cruise is considering for his next outing. It's also mentioned that,Scott Frank (Out of Sight, The Lookout) is rewriting the project, which previously had Chris Tucker and Eva Mendes attached with director Tom Dey. Joaquin Phoenix Quits Acting

Joaquin Phoenix is retiring from Hollywood - at the age of 34.

The Walk The Line star announced his plans to move away from acting at a fundraiser for late actor Paul Newman's children's charity on Monday.

Phoenix will instead focus on his budding music career.

He told Extra, "I want to take this opportunity... also to give you the exclusive and just talk a little bit about the fact that this will be my last performance as an actor... I'm not doing films anymore.

"I'm working on my music. I'm done. I've been through that."

And the news has been confirmed by his representative, who says, "That is what he told me."

Phoenix's brother-in-law Casey Affleck, who is married to Summer Phoenix, insists the star is for real: "I don't think he's kidding. He's got music and stuff."

Phoenix has made just one movie this year - romantic drama Two Lovers with Gwyneth Paltrow.

His vocal skills were applauded in 2005 when he recorded the soundtrack for the Johnny Cash biopic Walk The Line. His efforts won him a Grammy award, and he is now working on an album with British rocker Tim Burgess from The Charlatans. (IMDB)

Stiller, Witherspoon fly with Crowe

By Michael Fleming,Tatiana Segel,Variety
June 8,2008
Ben Stiller and Reese Witherspoon will star in an untitled Cameron Crowe romantic comedy adventure at Columbia Pictures.

Columbia was the winning bidder, beating out four rival studios, in landing the fully developed project, which is being produced by Scott Rudin. Crowe, who wrote the screenplay, is also producing.

Studio is keeping the logline of the contemporary-set project under wraps.

Project reunites Crowe with Columbia for the first time since the helmer's "Almost Famous" in 2000. Crowe and studio topper Amy Pascal have a long-standing relationship that dates back to the filmmaker's 1989 "Say Anything," when Pascal was an executive at 20th Century Fox. Crowe made "Jerry Maguire" -- his biggest box office success -- for Columbia and Pascal.

Film, which will begin lensing in January when Stiller and Witherspoon's schedules open, brings together Rudin and Crowe for the first time. Columbia's move is reminiscent of Pascal outbidding several other parties in February to make Roland Emmerich's pricey "2012." Once again, Columbia is ponying up a sizable sum to add an instant slot-filler to its slate.

Stiller next will be seen in the August comedy "Tropic Thunder," which he also co-wrote, produced and directed. He is shooting "Night at the Museum 2: Escape From the Smithsonian."

Witherspoon's upcoming projects include "Four Christmases," opposite Vince Vaughn. She is voicing characters for DreamWorks Animation's "Monsters vs. Aliens." Read more!

3:10 to Yuma Review

SPOILER WARNING!!
James Mangold's filmography shows his diversity as a director. From Copland(1997) to Walk the Line(2005) and now 3:10 to Yuma ,James Mangold has directed a dirty cop drama,a biopic and now a western.3:10 to Yuma is is a remake of the 1957 film 3:10 to Yuma, making it the second adaptation of Elmore Leonard's short story.I have not seen the original movie ,so i can't comment on the differences between the two movies. The movie is divided in three parts:the first is about the events before the arrest of Ben Wade (Russell Crowe),the second is about the events during the journey to the train station and the third is about the arrival in Contention and about the subsequent events.
3:10 to Yuma is a western but it is also a character drama. It is a character drama because a significant part of the plot centers (around) the two main characters:Ben Wade and Dan Evans (Christian Bale).Ben Wade is a wanted outlaw, who has stolen thousands of dollars and who has a loyal lang, while Dan Evans is a impoverished rancher,a family man, a Civil War veteran, the service of whom in the army has influenced his present life to a significant extent. He is struggling to make ends meet and has to face the criticism of his wife and of his older son. When Wade is arrested (with the help of Dan Evans),Evans is enlisted to guard and deliver him to the Contention train station. On the way to the train station, the escort team faces various challenges, hostile conversations take place, people are killed.Wade tries to escape, however the group finally arrives to the destination.
Dan Evans is commited to deliver Wade for arrest. While others abandon,he continues. The last part of the movie is the last stand of Evans.During this time,Evans and Wade come to some short of understanding and respect.Although Wade is an outlaw ,he shows that some sense of morality and respect still exists in him.He is an ambiguous character and so is the ending of the movie.
Russell Crowe and Christian Bale give powerful perfomances. The music is ,at times, great and the direction is also very good.3:10 to Yuma is fresh take on an old movie genre. It is a western with substance.
