Revenge of the epic movie flops: They've tried remaking hits from the past – now Hollywood studios are planing to revisit the films that failed.

When Overboard – a dubious 1987 comedy about the antics of a rich woman who suffers from amnesia after falling from her yacht – was released, not even a stellar cast featuring Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn could stop it from sinking at the box office. Then there was Dune, the lavish 1984 science fiction odyssey directed by the ultra-hip David Lynch, starring the acclaimed Francesca Annis and Sting, which cost $40m to make. It pulled in a grand total of $29.7m at the box office.
Then there was The Shadow, 1994's offering about a masked vigilante, with Alec Baldwin in the title role. The film was meant to be a summer blockbuster and the starting point for a new franchise with toys and clothing lines to boot. Critics and fans did not agree, and it flopped.
These films not only have failure in common. With a rafter of other screen turkeys, they are all to be remade as part of a growing trend in Hollywood to look to the past for big budget failures in the hope of transforming them into success stories.

Jason Statham, The Mechanic?
According to a Twitter alert from Production Weekly, Jason Statham is slated to star in a remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson movie The Mechanic.PW adds that director Simon West (Con Air and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider) is in talks to direct the remake.The IMDB claims the new Mechanic will be revamped as a post-9/11 spy film for Rambo V production company Millennium Films. Statham is currently shooting Millennium's The Expendables.

In March,it was reported that Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace),Sam Worthington (Avatar,Terminator Salvation),Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale,After the Wedding) and Alexa Davalos (Defiance,Chronicles of Riddick) joined the cast of the Louis Letterier (Transporter 2,Incredible Hulk) remake.The Hollywood Reporter reports that Liam Neeson has signed on and Ralph Fiennes is in final negotiations.Neeson will play Zeus,king of the gods and father of Perseus (Sam Worthington). Fiennes will play Hades, ruler of the underworld who aims to overtake Zeus and rule over all. Read more!
Cruise and Travolta in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid remake?
According to express.co.uk,Tom Cruise wants to remake the 1969 classic Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and star in it along with John Travolta.Cruise reportedly got the blessing of Paul Newman before he passed on.
According to the Express' source, this remake has "been a pet project of his [Cruise] that has been on the back-burner for years. But now he's ready to go, and will most likely happily eschew the enormous salary that he normally commands."

Cast in 13 Tzameti remake:Rourke,Statham,Riley and 50 Cent

Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, Sam Riley and 50 Cent have committed to act in the remake of French Russian roulette thriller 13 Tzameti.
Named simply 13, the cast will be directed by Gela Babluani, who was also involved in the 2005 original. Filming is set to commence in and around New York City on November 17, with Paramount Vantage backing the project.
"13 is a high concept, tautly wound thriller with universal appeal," Vantage's Alex Walton told Screen Daily. "The combination of the phenomenal, international cast and Gela's undeniable talent take this compelling story of character and chance in dynamic directions that are sure to captivate audiences worldwide."
13 Tzameti was an instant hit, winning the 2006 Sundance Grand Jury Prize, European Discovery Of The Year at the European Film Awards, the Lion Of The Future award at the Venice Film Festival. It also earned two Cesar nominations.
Rick Schwartz' Overnight Productions, Barbarian Films and Morabito Picture Company will be producing. 13 is the third film to get the go-ahead as a result of Barbarian's strategic alliance with Oceana.
