Fox's medical marvel stays on top: 'House' reaches its 100th episode

By Diane Werts,Variety
January 29,2009
Imagine a blend of TV heroes Dr. Kildare, Ironside and Gil Grissom. Now throw in Monty Python and Mick Jagger.
"You can't always get what you want," runs the Rolling Stones riff heard in the pilot of "House," but in this mad mix of a medical mystery series, Fox executives got more than they needed or even dreamed. One hundred episodes later, "House" remains a network mainstay.
"This is one of our crown jewels," says Fox Entertainment president Kevin Reilly. "It's the fall linchpin that I'm building the schedule around" until "American Idol" relaunches each winter.
Not only did "House" finish the 2007-08 season as one of primetime's most-watched dramas, but its ascendance since its November 2004 debut sped Fox's evolution from insurgent youth to steady maturity.
"'House,' along with '24,' really established (Fox Broadcasting Co.) as a place for high-quality dramas," says Peter Liguori, who rose alongside "House" from his position as programming president 2004-2007 to Fox Entertainment chairman. "It allowed us to become a home for the creative community to come to for episodic character-driven shows."
And all Fox wanted back in 2004 was a reliable procedural, recalls series creator and executive producer David Shore.

INTERVIEW: Lisa Edelstein Talks House

Below, there are excerpts from Movieweb's Lisa Edelstein interview. Lisa Edlelstein portrays Dr. Lisa Cuddy in House M.D.
Do you sense movement in Cuddy's character in recent seasons? Do you sort of see a place that she's going from here?
Lisa Edelstein: I do. I really think that her character has been filled out and that her relationship with House has become a beautiful, complicated, adult relationship filled with all kinds of subliminal messages. And it's fun to play, and even when they don't write it, I put it in.
I've always had a theory that she loves House and all of the games she has to play to keep him in line. What do you think of that theory?
Lisa Edelstein: I think that theory is right on the money. I think that she very much loves House and also lives vicariously through him because she's a very smart woman who is very successful as a doctor and has a great job and a wonderful position, but also has had less and less to do with the actual practicing of medicine as the years have gone by, so I think she's excited by what he does and how he does it and deeply frustrated by him at the same time. But as all intense people are, they're incredibly interesting and compelling, and she definitely falls victim to that.
What do you think that House thinks of Cuddy? Do you think he loves her like she loves him?
Lisa Edelstein: I think he's attracted to her. I think he likes her smarts. I'm not sure House is capable of love the way other people are. I think he's so disconnected to himself in that way that it would be impossible for him to truly be able to connect to somebody else. I mean, I think he loves Cuddy and I think he loves Wilson, but I don't know that it would be in the same way they love him.
So you said you're starting right back up again, you're still aiming for a fall premiere for season five?
Lisa Edelstein: Oh, yes. We're starting season five. As soon as we finished season four, we started season five. We're working straight through until August. Usually we have May and June off, so we work through to August, then we take a break for a few weeks, and then we come back and work through December. So, barring an actor's strike, that will be our schedule.

Street Kings review

I like dirty cop movies (mainly Narc and Copland).Street Kings is a movie where corrupt cops are the center of the story. The main character of the plot is Tom Ludlow,a struggling, loyal cop who has experienced a personal drama, something that continues to influence his life.He has done questionable things, but there's still some sense of morality, justice in him.People close to him are not who they seem to be,and he is trapped in a situation, where his life is ,eventually,at stake. It is a power struggle, and he's the victim of it,along with other people. The dark, violent side of L.A,of L.A.P.D is present throughout the movie. There many twists,in a plot where the role of each character is constantly at question. The final twist is the most shocking one.The perfomances are good (Keanu Reeves is really good).Although you may predict some of the plot delevopments, and although the movie sometimes slows down,Street Kings is a good movie.
David Ayer, who directed Street Kings,is the writer of Training Day (2001),Dark Blue (2003) and U-571 (2000).He co-wrote S.W.A.T (2003) and The Fast and the Furious (2001).He directed, wrote and produced Harsh Times (2006).
