Brett Ratner updates on Beverly Hills Cop 4 and more

Brett Ratner (Rush Hour series, X-Men 3, Red Dragon) recently talked with Movieline about his slate of projects in-development.

About Conan: "(Conan is ) something I'm actively attached to. We're just budgeting the script and trying to figure out when's a good time and where to shoot it. It's kind of a global landscape."

Beverly Hills Cop 4?
"Yes.

After Conan?
I don’t know. I’m developing the script.

Another rumor said you’re looking for a PG-13 for it.
No. That’s ridiculous. It’s a hard R."

Trump Heist?
"Yes. That’s the script that’s closest to getting made, in my opinion. Ted Griffin, who wrote Ocean’s Eleven for me when I was attached, is writing it now. I just hired him to come in and write Trump Heist, which is one of my favorite projects. Because of the way that the business is, you never know which slot you’re going to get, or when you’re going to make the movie. But that’s one I’m really, really interested in making. There’s no order to these movies, though. I don’t control the financing. Whichever gets greenlit first is the one that’s gonna go."

Robert Downey Jr. eyed for Sherlock Holmes?

June 11,2008-With Iron Man still raking it in at the box office, the film's star, Robert Downey Jr., has gone from being box office poison a few years ago to a bonafide draw. Downey is reportedly being eyed for a number of high-profile projects now in the works.

According to Entertainment Weekly's Hollywood Insider Blog, Downey is not only being wooed to portray Playboy founder Hugh Hefner in a Brett Ratner-directed biopic, but also for Gary Ross' Dog Years and Fox's detective pic Travis McGee.

But the most genre-friendly project that Downey is said to be looking at is the Guy Ritchie-directed Sherlock Holmes film set up at Warner Bros. EW didn't specify whether Downey was up for the title role or perhaps his partner Dr. Watson or adversary Professor Moriarty. Given that he can now open a movie in his own right, it would seem likely that Downey is mulling the role of the world's greatest detective.

Beverly Hills Cop 4 News

Recent years have seen some of the great franchises of the 1980s undergo timely updates. In the last 12 months alone, we've had Rambo IV, Indy IV and Die Hard IV, so it was only a matter of time before iconic action comedy Beverly Hills Cop got the same treatment.

According to Variety, Paramount -- currently raking in the nostalgia dollar off the back of Indy -- has set the project up, with Eddie Murphy reprising his role as smart-ass detective Axel Foley.

Meanwhile, perennial fan-boy hate figure Brett Ratner (who directed the none-too-dissimilar Rush Hour films) is "in negotiations" to direct the film. Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the insanely popular originals along with the late Don Simpson, will not be involved.

Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura will instead oversee the project, and is currently searching for a writer to pen the screenplay.

Filming will begin in 2009, so expect to hear that iconic theme tune in summer 2010.
